He just HAD to have it. One cab ride last year started the domino effect that changed the Mets future and is still having an effect on the team that leaves a sour taste in your mouth. Because of the cab accident, in which Sanchez craved late night food, he severely separated his pitching shoulder (which required surgery) and sent the Mets scrambling to try to salvage their brilliant 2006 season from which they STILL have not recovered.Domino 1. To replace Sanchez, the Mets traded starting rightfielder Xavier Nady (who was having a good season) to get geriatric Roberto Hernandez, whom the Mets let go at the end of the previous season, and throw-in Oliver Perez. Hernandez was so "good" down the stretch, he was rewarded by being left off the post season roster while Nady finished with 17 hrs, .280 BA.Domino 2. Because now they had no rightfielder, they traded for fellow geriatric Shawn Green, who once hit a lot of HRs like ten years ago. He played mediocre the rest of 2006 (.257 BA, 4 hrs) and was best known for not making the catch in Game 2 of the NLCS, which might have prevented the Mets from losing.Domino 3. Before playoffs start, Mets pick-up Guillermo Mota off waivers. He becomes a godsend and finishes with ERA of 1.00 in 18 innings of relief. Because he is so effective, the Mets will later re-sign him to strengthen bullpen, which makes other Mets expendable (see Dominos 4 & 6). No one knew that he would later test positive for performance-enhancing drugs.Domino 4. After the disappointing loss to the Cards in the NLCS, the dominos still continued to fall in the off-season. Thinking they had a gem in Mota, they traded relievers Heath Bell and Royce Ring to San Diego for OF Ben Johnson and P Jon Adkins. Bell and Ring were used primarily as mop-up men with the Mets, neither really getting a significate chance. "Bell is probably the one guy that we certainly feel that has tremendous upside," SD general manager Kevin Towers said. "The guy has always had really good strikeout-to-walk ratios in the minor leagues." Towers words ring true as Bell has gobbled up innings (80.1) and has a 2.24 ERA. Both Johnson and Adkins would not make the Mets in 2007.Domino 5. Falling in love with Perez and his 3-13 record, learning Mota was suspended for 50 games and seeing that Sanchez&#8217; injury was worse than expected, they trade now-expendable(?) Brian Bannister (their sometime 5th starter), for fireballer reliever Ambiorix Burgos, who impressed the Mets with his 12 blown saves with the KC Royals. Bannister this year was 12-8 with a 3.46 in the AL and had been mentioned in Sports Illustrated and The Sporting News. Burgos was brutal in '07 and eventually had season-ending surgery. Domino 6. Still in the off-season, the Mets parted ways with AWOL Steve Traschel and with Dave Williams (back surgery) and Pedro Martinez (rotator cuff surgery) hurt, realized they needed some starting pitchers to round out the rotation (Bannister?). With Burgos replacing Sanchez in the bullpen and Mota signing a contract despite being suspended, the Mets trade some promising relievers, Matt Lindstrom and Henry Owens to Florida for pitchers Jason Vargas and Adam Bostick. &#8220;We think Vargas and Bostick are two promising left-handed pitchers and are happy to have them in the organization,&#8221; said Mets GM Omar Minaya. Lindstrom (96 mph) and Owens (98 mph) are in the Marlins bullpen, while Vargas and Bostick were placed in the Mets minor league purgatory.Domino 7. Being so optimistic that Burgos could cut down his blown-saves by one or two and believing sidearm reliever Joe Smith could jump from college to the Pros, they let reliable Chad Bradford sign elsewhere siteing the large 3-year contract as the deterent. Months later, wanting to add another lefty to the bullpen, they signed Scott Schoeneweis, to the same 3-year contract as Bradford. Having pitched 18 scoreless innings to finish out the 2006 season to lower his era from 6.51 was something the Mets simply could not pass on.Domino 8. With El Duque and Tom Glavine a year older, Pedro Martinez out til September and John Maine and Oliver Perez inexperienced, GM Minaya realized that his starting rotation might break down during the year. Since trading away relievers Lindstrom, Bell, Ring and Owens, who might have made the team in 2007, the Mets elected to go with Aaron Sele to round out a bullpen that has been a merry-go-round ever since that fateful cab ride last year. Sele often dazzles his opponents with his 86 mph fastball and usually "holds" the other team down to another run or two, enough so the Mets rally falls just short. The Mets have now: Green- .278 BA, 8 hrs; Mota- 5.79 ERA; Schoeneweis- 5.08 ERA; Sele- 5.26 ERA; Burgos- Out for Year; Vargas- 4.97 ERA in minors; Bostick- 5.66 ERA in minors. What Mets could have been: Nady- .288 BA, 17 hrs; Bannistar- 12-8, 3.46 ERA; Bradford- 3.59 ERA; Owens- 1.96 ERA; Lindstrom- 3.41 ERA; Bell- 2.24 ERA; Sanchez- 5-1, 2.60 ERA before getting hurt. With the Mets current bullpen mess, we fans try to imagine how things would have turned out differently, and wonder &#8220;what if?" Sanchez just could have waited until breakfast. A World Series championship? Hey, if the 83-win Cardinals won the World Series, why not the Mets? And for 2007, most of these bad trades would never have happened. He just HAD to have it.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6708372753134323079-182913258524659398?l=therantman888.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

Finally, It's Time For A Rave

Finally, It's Time For A RaveEven though we are calling our blog Rants and Raves, you wouldn't know it by reading the first few posts. We haven't had much to rave about but finally, something good happened. I was starting to think about pulling the site down already, thinking our words were killing the Mets' chances of making the playoffs. Finally, it's time for a rave. The Mets played a pretty good game last night. The offense saw contributions from David Wright, Moises Alou and even Jose Reyes. Jeff Conine dropped down a successful sacrifice bunt to move Alou over to third so he could easily score on Paul LoDuca's sac fly. Speaking of LoDuca, he is exactly the kind of player the Mets need. Someone who really cares and will do anything to win. He has been one of their most vocal critics during this most recent slump and he has backed up all of that talk by playing hard and doing his part to win. After getting hit on the hand during his 8th inning at bat, he tried to come back on the field only to leave after being unable to throw the ball to second base. By the way, after being disgusted with the recent losing streak, LoDuca went back to his hotel room Tuesday night and shaved his head. It will be interesting to see if any of his teammates follow suit.Mike Pelfrey was pretty good overall. He had a few rough spots but got through them with little damage. Jorge Sosa bailed him out in the 6th inning. It was good to see Willie Randolph finally execute the double-switch the correct way in the right situation. Nice! Sosa pitched a scoreless 7th and Aaron Heilman pitched a scoreless 8th leading to Billy Wagner who gave up a run but ended the game and the 5 game losing streak. Us Mets fans can finally breathe a slight sigh of relief. The losing streak is over and now it's off to Miami to face Dontrell Willis and the Florida Marlins. Willis was pushed back from his last start so he can face the Mets in the series opener. Looks like the Marlins are trying to play spoiler. Glavine starts tonight, followed by Pedro, Perez and Maine. Let's start a winning streak so we can have more to rave about.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6708372753134323079-8416949787762051852?l=therantman888.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

Willie Needs to Go

Willie Needs to GoThere, I said it. Everyone else seems to defend the guy. Make excuses, blame someone else. Not me, I can't take it anymore. If he doesn't blow their playoff chance, he WILL blow their shot at a championship. Maybe I'm a little biased. I never wanted him as manager anyway. Why do we have to mimic the Yankees? We have to hire an ex-Yankee for our manager? Wasn't there anyone else? Anyone could have been better than Art Howe but that isn't saying too much. I'm not saying they should go back to Howe, but they definitely need someone new. At least right now, Willie does not have what it takes to succeed as a manager. He has much more learning to do.The Mets are a much better team than they were with Howe which make Willie's job easier. Though he still finds ways to screw it up. As much as people don't want to admit to it, he does not have the killer instinct, a quality that after this past weekend series against the Phillies the players are sorely missing. Why is it that whenever the Mets win the first 2 games in a series, EVERYONE rests in the third game? They should be taking advantage and go for a sweep, show that killer instinct. But Willie rests most of, if not all of the regulars and they wind up getting hammered. (See 3rd game of Reds series) When showing the lineup for the Phillies during Sunday's game, Keith Hernandez even mentioned, "When you've won your 1st 2 games, you go with your guns in the third." When was the last time the Mets did this? I understand guys needs days off, but not all at the same time. They have a good enough team that they can survive with a few of their bench players playing, not all of them at the same time.Poor play killed the Mets this entire series. When did professional ballplayers forget how to catch routine fly balls and grounders? They needed to come up big time this weekend and put the Phillies away. They crumbled and a lot of that has to fall on their manager. I know what the Willie apologists are going to say... "It's not Willie's fault that the team made 6 errors and walked 11 batters on Sunday." You are right, he didn't. But, once Carlos Beltran hit his clutch home run to tie the game at 5, all of that has to be forgotten. They came back and it is a new ballgame. It IS Willie's fault that he is so stubborn and keeps using Guillermo Mota in close games. Games that he has no business being part of. Of the 3 batters he faced, 2 of them were walked. Willie has to stop with this blind allegiance to these losers. It took him a while to stop using Scot Schoenweiss in big spots. How long will it take for him to do the same with Mota?Willie's in-game management leaves many scratching their heads. His reasoning makes many scream. When you are trying to crush your division rival and put them away, how can you say that Mota is your guy? He has failed in just about every scenario that he has been used in yet Willie keeps on trotting him out there. When was the last time the Mets used a squeeze play? A double switch? I don't know if Willie knows what they are. He burns through so many pitchers because of this. And finally some advise for Willie. When you claim that a pitcher is unavailable or needs a day off, make sure that players knows about it. According to Billy Wagner, he was not aware that he was unavailable and did not ask for a day off.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6708372753134323079-8376742784858427009?l=therantman888.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

Who should be the starting quarterback for the Jets?

Kellen Clemens or Chad Pennington?<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6708372753134323079-6646633682701557037?l=therantman888.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

The First One's the Sweetest

For the longest time, I've wanted to air my frustrations and adulations of my favorite sports teams from Long Island, NY. With the help of my friend, I've created this blog to blow off steam and help keep my blood pressure to a some-what normal level as I try to live with the ups and downs of being a fan whose teams have not won any championships in what seems like an eternity. Mets manager Willie Randolph continues to boggle the mind with his bullpen choices in close games. Last night starting pitcher John Maine had another win snatched away (he could easily have 18 wins) as reliever Guillermo Mota failed to hold a 3-1 eighth inning lead. Why is Randolph still bringing Mota in (5.79 era), in close games. Every Mets fan knows that if it's a close game, Mota, Aaron Sele and Scott Schoeneweis should never be close to entering the game at that point. These guys are automatic, like kicking extra points after a touchdown, to give up runs. What I can't understand is Willie's BLATANT reasoning that he will keep marching these guys out there until "they fix themselves." Isn't it the managers job to try to win every game? What if they really suck and CAN'T be fixed? What's the point of expanding the 40-man roster in Sept., if you don't use the extra arms that are available? If I stuck my finger in the light socket 5 times and got shocked 5 times, I'd eventually stop sticking my finger IN THE SOCKET! I really feel bad for guys like Maine and Tom Glavine, who have lost numerous wins to blown saves/bad bullpen desicions. It has to be really disheartening to pitch a great game, sit in the dugout and watch Willie parade any of those 3 schmucks out there to try to hold your lead. Publicly you've got to say the right things, but I wonder what Maine, Glavine and any other starter must think TO THEMSELVES when Willie keeps sending them in.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6708372753134323079-7647834643565139619?l=therantman888.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>

They Deserve What They Get

After watching last night's Mets' debacle, we fans have to objectively question the choices of the Willie Randolph / Omar Minaya tandem and say that they deserve exactly what they got this year. For some unexplained reason, we Mets fans have the ability to see this team in a different light than they do, and have for some time now. For years, we questioned, screamed, begged Willie to stop using players like DeJean, Koo, Lima, iishi..etc. When we all said to drop Piazza out of the 4-hole, it only took Willie 3/4 of a season to do it. When we pleaded to Willie to stop bringing in DeJean, it only took most of the season. When we could tell that Gonzalez, Lima and iishi were bums after only a few starts, Willie kept giving them chance after chance, throwing games away like there was no tommorrow. This latest set of bums, Sele, Schowenweis and Mota are being marched out there as Mets fans once again are left scratching their heads. For all the Willie supporters, we Mets fans are not stupid, we KNOW that Willie and Omar don't pitch or hit in the field. But their DECISIONS and ARROGANCE are hurting this team. Last year the Mets had one of the best bullpens in the league. They CHOSE not to re-sign Bradford. Schowenweis didn't seek out the Mets, they CHOSE him. They CHOSE Sele to round out the bullpen and because of his good performance last year, CHOSE to put all their eggs into the Mota basket. When this all goes bad, they have to look into the mirror. The Mets just got swept again by the Phils, so who do you turn to to stop a bad losing streak? Brian Lawrence? Fans know this guy is a constant 4/4 guy, gives up 4 runs in 4 innings EVERY time out. The brain-trust shifted their rotation around so Pedro can get extra rest! Pedro pitches every 5th day, if you don't win any of the games in between, what's the point? They can lose the division lead before Pedro's next start!!! Lawrence? Move up Pelfry or Maine, try Humber, what about Dave Williams? After a few key wins last year down the stretch, Williams got one shot and one shot only this year. Lawrence and his 6 ERA was the CHOICE of the brain-trust to stop the worst streak of bad baseball this season. I think the main reason that Mets fans can see this team differently is in one word, OBJECTIVE. We are honest and only care about the bottom line-winning. Whenever Willie is questioned about one of his head-scratching moves, his answer is always, "The fans aren't around the players, they don't know what goes on in the lockerroom, what's behind the scenes in the clubhouse." EXACTLY. Willie and Omar aren't OBJECTIVE with this team. Maybe they're too friendly with the players. Maybe their wives are friends with the players wives. They're hoping for, the're rooting for the players to bounce back or fight through. Sometimes when you're too close to something/someone, you have to step back to get perspective and properly assess. Willie and Omar root for Mota, hope Schowenweis comes through and want Sele to succeed, when they need to be OBJECTIVE and see these players as we see them. Personally, we don't hate these players or wish them harm, but we fans CAN tell when they cannot do a job. It's like having a really good friend at work who's a bad employee. He's bad for the company, but you don't want to see him fired. They had all season to fix the bullpen, make moves, do SOMETHING and they CHOSE not to. Instead, it was so-o-o-o important to go get another second baseman when they had Gotay hitting .340. Now at the end of the season, we're stuck with these guys and their 5-something ERAs. I hate to say it Met fans, but the division title is slipping away and the playoffs are not going to be pretty. Who is the bullpen going to get out?And that is being OBJECTIVE.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6708372753134323079-7541451900923145697?l=therantman888.blogspot.com' alt='' /></div>
